About Solomon Santo Grial

Artist. Author. Storyteller. Creator of Worlds.

Solomon Santo Grial is a British contemporary artist and author whose work occupies the territory between fine art, storytelling, popular culture, mythology and imagined worlds.

His pictures are not created simply to decorate a wall. They are fragments of stories.

Characters appear, disappear and return. Places have histories. Objects carry meaning. A seemingly straightforward portrait may belong to a narrative extending far beyond the edge of the picture. Across Solomon’s work, the viewer repeatedly encounters the suggestion that another world exists alongside our own — strange, theatrical, dangerous, humorous and occasionally beautiful.

Solomon Santo Grial’s artistic practice combines traditional artistic thinking with contemporary digital processes, photography, illustration, airbrush aesthetics and image-making technologies. Rather than allowing technique to dictate the work, Solomon uses whatever medium best serves the idea.

The result is an evolving body of work that can move from hyper-real portraiture to surrealism, cinematic imagery, speculative fiction, satire and modern mythology.

The Story Comes First

At the centre of Solomon’s practice is narrative.

Many of the people appearing in his artworks are not anonymous models. They are characters with names, personalities and histories.

Benjamin Truman, Given, Valerie, Frosty Jack, Mortimer, the Hoofstock brothers and numerous other figures inhabit an expanding fictional universe that crosses between visual art and literature.

Some emerged first in writing.

Others began as images and subsequently demanded stories of their own.

This relationship between the written word and the visual image has become fundamental to Solomon’s work. A painting may inspire a chapter. A fictional character may become a portrait. A location described in a story may later become an artwork.

The distinction between illustrator, artist and author therefore becomes deliberately blurred.

Solomon describes this process as creating worlds rather than simply creating pictures.

From Underground Culture to Fine Art

Solomon’s creative history has been shaped by an enduring fascination with image-making and alternative culture.

Early influences include graffiti, street imagery, printed graphics, music, film, comics, advertising and the visual language of popular culture. These influences exist alongside a strong interest in classical painting, portraiture and the meticulous craftsmanship associated with earlier European art.

This mixture of high and low culture remains important.

A Renaissance reference may coexist with a nightclub sign.

A carefully composed portrait may contain the visual language of punk, fashion photography or science fiction.

An apparently classical figure may turn out not to be human at all.

For Solomon, art does not need permission to cross these boundaries.
